Kapalabhati, the “skull shining breath,” is a steady repetition of forceful

exhalations, followed by slightly slower, passive inhalations. Each outward breath

is propelled by a powerful inward thrust of the abdomen. Following this thrust, the

abdomen quickly relaxes and the breath flows back into the lungs. The inhalation

is smooth and effortless. This prepares the respiratory system for the next thrust

of the abdomen, which drives air up and out of the nose. All breaths are through

the nose.

We're practicing Kapalabhati breathing in the core series now, because it's directly connected to controlling the muscles of the abdomen. Pranayama means "control over the vital power or life force." Kapalabhati pranayama has many benefits. It's a practice that wakes up the mind so it's wonderful for improved cognition. It keeps the lung tissue healthy and can be beneficial for integrating trauma and supporting mental health and much more. Pranayama practices are powerful and should only be practiced with an educated guide. For more pranayama practice, join any individual or series class here: https://feelthepeaceyoga.lynsirota.com/
