Any idea what your calf muscles and your heart have in common? They both circulate blood in the body. You probably already knew that about your heart and its role in the circulatory system. But maybe the calf is news? The gastrocnemius is the most superficial calf muscle which means that it's closest to the skin. It helps us to point and flex the feet and assists with knee flexion. The calf muscles play a part in venous return, acting as the pump in the low body. Walking, movement, and simple ankle pumps can help maintain adequate blood pressure and support venous return.

So, next time you're sitting for a while whether it's due to driving, flying, desk work, or some other reason, shift your weight to the balls of your feet. Then shift your weight to the heels, as if you're rocking your feet front to back, back to front. This will activate the gastrocnemius (pump). We practice this movement in every Yoga for Arthritis class. For more tips and wellness content, visit: https://feelthepeaceyoga.lynsirota.com/.
