While there is so much we do for the body, mind, soul in our yoga practice, perhaps one of the things we tone on many levels is stability. Stability is different from strength. Strength is the ability of a muscle to do a task like move a load. Stability is the ability to resist movement like when we're holding sunbird, a tabletop balancing pose or Vrksasana, Tree Pose. Both of those poses are in different planes of gravity and contract/stabilize different muscles.
On a subtle level, practicing yoga builds stability in the mind and psyche. To ride the waves of life instead of being swallowed up by them.
