You might think this post is about the yummy small plate meals in many Spanish restaurants, but alas, no! The third Niyama, or ethical observance of yoga is Tapas which is the fire of transformation. It loosely translates as "to burn." In series yoga classes we're focusing on moving just beyond our comfort zones. Tapas is the practice of being okay with a little discomfort. Without realizing it, many of us have developed a disproportionate level of fear to pain so that comfort becomes our default, that we grasp in an unhealthy way. Whether it is our creature comforts like coffee, tea, or alcohol, our temperature-controlled homes, or one-click orders from Amazon that arrive same day. I recently realized I was okay with skipping coffee for a day. I didn't get a headache and wasn't uncomfortable, much to my surprise. Did I feel like something was missing? Yes. But I was able to push past that feeling. When we practice tapas we cultivate the ability to move through discomfort and live with more freedom and tolerance. Much like stones and shells get weathered on a beach becoming smooth and beautiful, in our own lives when we face challenges, they shape us, and reveal brilliance and resilience.
